Fire Service Memorabilia Collectables - Read this interesting article by Chief Kuk about a company that relied on hand work and individual craftsmen to produce their items. Chief Kuk state that he believes that their collectibles will become more treasured as time passes since only a limited number were made and exported. He said, "I was fortunate to see several of their items at the 2000 Intershutz in Augsburg, Germany and wanted to buy one of everything.  but then I had to come to grips with the fact that I did not have my large pickup truck with me."  Click HERE or on the thumbnail to go to this article

The Caddo Parish 9-1-1 District has an "Enhanced 9-1-1   System", which provides immediate information containing the caller's name, address, and telephone number.  If you hang up, the Communications Officer  will call back! If the Communications Officer receives a "9-1-1" call and no one is on the phone (either the phone is an "open line" or the caller hangs up), the Communications Officer will attempt to call the telephone number back to determine if there is an emergency.   If no answer is received, the closest available law enforcement agency will be dispatched to investigate the call.  Click HERE or on the thumbnail to see Video Clips about our 9-1-1 System.

At about 14:00hrs on April 17th Signal 51 Member Mike Lowe saw the smoke loom-up from this one-alarm house fire in the 900 block of Pickett St. and took several photos.   Engines 1, 5 and 7; Truck 1; Rescue 1 and the 1st District Chief responded.  Later Engine 8 was special called for additional manpower.  The temperature was in the 90's so it was a little uncomfortable in bunkers.  The fire was controlled and while the exposures were very close to the fully involved structure none were damaged.  Click HERE or on the thumbnail to see more photos of this fire.

Fire Buffs at Region 5 meeting in Beaumont, Texas. The meeting went off without a hitch in Beaumont this past weekend.  There were 17 attendees from clubs based in Shreveport, Dallas, and Houston as well as several affiliate members who all enjoyed the clear skies and low temps and humidity.  To no one's surprise, John Hembrey was the farthest traveled to the meeting, coming from Canon City, Colorado.  Click HERE or on the thumbnail to see more about this meeting.

At 4:15AM, Tuesday March 21, 2006 a 2-Alarm fire destroyed one unit of a Greenwood Villa Townhouse on Danny Wimberly Drive. The fire was really rolling when the first units arrived on scene and a second alarm was quickly transmitted.   A family was asleep in the apartment right next to the vacant unit that was destroyed, but a fire wall prevented the fire from spreading and the family was not injured.

City Council Approves Ninth Ambulance. From the Shreveport Times Newspaper. February 28, 2006 -- By Francis McCabe  --  The Shreveport city council unanimously approved the funding for a ninth ambulance at today’s meeting.  According to the Fire Department’s analysis of the situation, the city has been short at least two medic units because of increased call for service. Recently the department had planned to relocate some medic units around the city to better serve the bulk of the calls. That plan was met by a public back lash, after which Mayor Keith Hightower said he would fund a ninth ambulance. Shreveport resident Jack McLeod said today’s vote is a good example of how the council looks out for the immediate and critical needs of Shreveport residents. “I’m thrilled that they are doing what needs to be done. At the beginning people though it was the issue of pulling from one area to support another. We weren’t fighting against Cedar Grove getting an ambulance but to add a 9th one to the city’s fleet. We were fighting for everyone in the city of Shreveport.” Hightower said he will prepare the 2007 budget to include purchasing a 10th ambulance and the paramedics needed to man the unit.

A Two-Car Collision at Preston and Knight resulted in a couple of people being transported to the hospital by 2 Medic Units.  Engine 11 was dispatched to Preston and Knight on a 'Cold Response' but called for a Medic Unit when they arrived on the scene.  Medic 19 arrived and requested that Engine 11 ask for a Rescue Unit to un-trap one of the injured.  Engine 11 called dispatch for the Rescue Unit and Rescue 1 responded.  Engine 11 also asked for another Medic Unit and Medic 5 was dispatched.

A Two-Story vacant house was reported on fire in the 800 blk of Hope St.  The fire was actually on Oakland, behind the new jail and near the rear of the Caddo 911 Center. The glow from the fire was seen by Engine 1 as they pulled out of quarters.  Some Communications workers stepped out the backdoor of the 911 Center and quickly reported that it was a working fire.  Because it was a vacant house and it was fully involved when the first units arrived, a defensive attack was used to combat the fire.   Click HERE or on the thumbnail to see more photos.

At 10:30 Hours, Friday, Jan.6, 2006 a Tanker Truck overturned at Youree Dr. & Bert Kouns and before the day was over, more than 30 units of the Shreveport fire, police, state police and city maintenance workers would be used to divert traffic, clean up and oversee the transfer of the fuel into another tanker.  This process took 5 hours to complete and kept one of  Shreveport busiest intersections blocked for more than 5 hours.  Firefighters treated the driver of the tanker for minor injuries.  No one else was hurt.  Click HERE or on the thumbnail to see more photos.
