Captured Events - 2007

SFD's Chief Cochran has been named the new Chief of Atlanta, Georgia FD. Chief is expected to begin his new post in January and will head a department that covers 132 square miles within the City of Atlanta. The Atlanta Fire Department also provides mutual aid to neighboring counties upon request. The Department has 37 fire stations and 1,045 employees (sworn and non-sworn). The fire chief also has oversight for the Airport Fire Service, which has 208 employees and provides aircraft fire protection, structural fire protection, emergency medical services protection, and hazardous materials/special rescue response protection to the traveling public and employees of Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which is the world's busiest airport. The fire service also operates and oversees the largest automatic defibrillator program in the country. Chief Cochran said, "It is an honor to have been appointed by Mayor Franklin to be the fire chief of the Atlanta Fire-Rescue Department. And went on to say, “The men and women of Atlanta Fire-Rescue are some of the most recognized fire professionals in the United States. Together we will work to create further improve the public safety quality of life for Atlanta's residents and visitors."
All the members of Signal 51 thank you Chief, for the interest and support you have given our organization over the years. And we appreciate the great job you have done for the City of Shreveport and know you will do an outstanding job in Atlanta.

November 12, 2007 at about 5:00pm Engine 2 was dispatched to leaves on fire at Lincoln & Swim Club Lane. Both Television and Newspaper reports of the incident stated that while responding with lights and siren Engine 2 made a left hand turn off of N. Market to Lincoln. As north bound cars slowed for the apparatus the driver proceeded across the intersection. As Engine 2 was crossing the lane it was broadsided by a pickup truck. One of the passenger, a 48 year old male, believed to have died en-route to the hospital in a S.F.D. Medic Unit. Both the driver of the engine and the pickup truck stated that they did not see each other. None of the engine's three firefighters were injured, but the male driver and 16 year old male passenger in the back seat of the pickup were transported to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. November 4, 2007 Personnel from both A & C Shifts were at this House Fire being that it came in right at Shift Change. Engines 15, 3, 19 & 17 - Truck 9 - Rescue 9 (using a reserve pumper) - District Chief 5 - Assistant Chief (Car 3) - EMS Supervisor (Car 82) - and Medic 19 took in the alarm of fire in this two-story home in the 500 block of Janet Lane. September 21, 2007 was a hot and smokey night for Shreveport firefighters. From around 5pm, they poured tons of water on burning bales of waste paper at a paper recycling plant on Bell Street. The paper caught fire shortly after a truck dropped off a load at the Recycled Fibers of Louisiana plant. Foam was used to smother the fire in the bales of waste paper. There were no injuries and only minor damage to one of the firm's buildings. After the fire was brought under control by the first alarm companies many other engines and ladder companies were rotated in and out of the fire scene until about 11pm. September 20, 2007, CalAmp’s Dataradio operating unit has signed a $2.4 million contract with the City of Shreveport, Louisiana to construct a mobile data network to be used by first responders within the surrounding Caddo Parish. While the work on the project is expected to begin immediately, system acceptance is scheduled for late-2008. CalAmp’s new Dataradio G3 Agile Dual Band (ADB) 800/700MHz IP platform will operate at 64K Kbps. The platform can be upgraded to support higher speeds in the future. Dispatchers can use the system to securely and accurately relay information to field personnel. The system also allows first responders to access information without the need for back-office support. Initially, the system will support approximately 500 first responders and have opportunities to further expand in the near future. The new Dataradio G3 ADB 800/700MHz IP platform will provide flexibility for Caddo Parish Emergency agencies well into the future. CalAmp is a provider of wireless communications products that enable anytime/anywhere access to critical information and data content.

Firefighter Nick Anderson 28, fought a courageous battle with leukemia, On Saturday morning the Lord came and brought Nick home, Most of us believe he is now in a better place, but it doesn’t help the fact he is no longer here with his brothers and sisters of the SFD, His Loving Wife, Family, and countless friends. Nick was an exceptional Firefighter and truly loved what he did, He never considered the Fire Service as a Job, and He as most viewed it as a calling. Firefighter Nick Anderson will be missed by all, but he will never be forgotten. Nick provided us all with a tremendous amount of inspiration and made us all stop and think about all the truly important things in life and that will keep us all moving forward. A little before 4:30AM on 8-9-07 a 2 alarm fire occurred in an apartment building on Marina Bay Drive in the Willow Ridge subdivision. Firefighter Steve Mull was injured when part of the upstairs floor collapsed. He was hit by debris and a dresser that fell through the floor. Mull was transported to the hospital, treated and released. A civilian was also slightly burned as she attempted to initially put out the fire caused by a candle. August 8, 2007. Members of the Shreveport Fire Department join city officials and others during a ground breaking ceremony for fire station 22 in Shreveport on Tuesday. The new station will be located just west of the new Providence subdivision. The address will be 2022 Southern Loop. The cost $1.9 million, funded by 2001 bond issue. It will be a 3-bay station. During a heavy thunderstorm on June 20, lightning caused a significant attic fire to a two story home at 320 Colony Bend. Engines 3, 10, 11, 20, Trucks 7, 20, Rescue 1, Medic 3, Dist. Chiefs 4 & 5 worked the fire. This was while the city was under a severe weather and flash flood alert.

On Sunday, June 17 a stolen SUV was driven into the Red River at Charles and Marie Hamel Memorial Park. SFD Divers Ray Mendenhall and Charlie Parker found the submerged vehicle and swam through the interior, but found no victims. Responding Units were Eng-3, Med-10, Med-19, Rescue-1, District Chief-5 & the Dive Van and Boat and, of course, Divers Ray Mendenhall & Charlie Parker.

As of June 1, 2007 a new District Chief Command has been added to the S.F.D. District Chief 6 is running out of Station 13, and will cover the western part of town. Stations 12, 13 & 18 will be under DC-6's command. DC-1 has Central Station, 5 & 7. DC-2 has Stations 2, 4, 6 & 8. DC-3 has Stations 14, 15, 16 & 21. DC-4 has Stations 9, 10, & 17. DC-5 stays the same with Stations 3, 11, 19 & 20. Station 22 still has not broken ground for some reason. Thanks to Chief Ken Conley for update.

Engine 19, Medic 3, Rescue 9 and District Chief 5 took in this MVA with injuries. The accident occurred at the intersection of Bert Kouns Industrial Loop and Millicent Way. Rescue 9's Jaws were used to extricate the injured driver. The driver was transported to the hospital by Medic 3. The photos were taken by Captain Darrell Braniff.

In the 7900 block of Line Ave this hot house fire required two extra engines to bring under control. Engine 9, Engine 10 and Engine 3; Truck 9; Rescue 9 and the 4th District Chief took in the first alarm. Medic 19 responded on the report that it was a working fire. Engine 7 and Engine 11 were special-called.

At 1800 hrs on 3/26/07 Signal 51 Members were paged out for a fire at the Calumet Refinery at 3333 Midway Ave. Shreveport Fire Department Spokesman Brian Crawford stated that, the explosion occurred in a holding vessel that includes "a huge heater lit by several different pilot lights." A refinery product (in this case naphtha) goes through the vessel in coils and is heated. Workers said that they noticed the pilot lights for the heater weren't lit and smelled the gas used in the heater. The gas used in the heater drifted into contact with a flame or flames burning 10 to 20 feet away, triggering the explosion, Two plant employees were injured and taken to the hospital, but both were released by Monday night. S.F.D. has a mutual aid agreement with the refinery to assist the Calumet Fire Personnel on fires of this nature. Engine 8 was first on the scene and took command until chief officers arrived. Engine 8 immediately laid a hand line to cool the involved pipeline down. At one point the fire spread to another area. More lines were laid and the fire spread was quickly contained. The lines were then used to surround and cool the original naphtha vessel until the fire was placed under control. Engines 4, 8, 16, 14, 15, 18 & 2; Trucks 16 & 7; Rescues 1 & 9 plus chiefs and other support personnel were at the scene. Another outstanding job by Shreveport's Bravest. Thanks to Todd Olague of Rescue 9 we do have the photos of the members that worked a house fire on Vivian Street on February 9, 2007. Companies that took in the call were Engines 15, 9 & 10 - Rescue 9 - Truck 9 - District Chief 4 and Medic 15.

Car goes into house after a collision at Creswell and Ratcliff. Engine & Medic 10, Rescue 1, Medic 15 & District Chief 5 made this call. Two people were transported to hospitals by the Medic Units.

This MVA happened at Bert Kouns and East Kings Hwy at 5.55AM on Jan. 22. Engine and Medic 3, Rescue 9 and District Chief 5 took in the call. Chief Conley took the photos and reported that two people were transported to the Hospital. For more photos of this accident, click HERE.

The Caddo Parish 9-1-1 District has an "Enhanced 9-1-1 System", which provides immediate information containing the caller's name, address, and telephone number. If you hang up, the Communications Officer will call back! If the Communications Officer receives a "9-1-1" call and no one is on the phone (either the phone is an "open line" or the caller hangs up), the Communications Officer will attempt to call the telephone number back to determine if there is an emergency.
